How To Calculate Weight Of Steel Bars

How to Calculate Weight Of Steel Bars

After estimating the quantity of Column/Slab/Beam, we get total number of bars and its length as per design. From the numbers and length it is mandatory to find the weight of varying dia bars. In practical work we get steel in kg or quintal or ton. In this article, we will discuss how to calculate the unit weight of steel bars of different diameters by using steel weight formula.

Here is the steel weight formula, W=D2/162

W = Weight of steel bars

D = Diameter of steel bars in mm

L = Length of bars in meter

For example - In Meter
1. Calculate the weight of 70 meters long 16mm Ø bar
Solution:

Given, D = 16 mm

           L = 70 m

We know that, W=D2/162

W = 162/162 = 1.580 kg/m

Weight of 1 meter length 16mm Ø bar is 1.580 kg

For 70 meter length = 70x1.580 = 110.60 kg

2. Calculate the weight of 60 meters long 12mm Ø bar
Solution:

Given, D = 12 mm

            L = 60 m

We know that, W=D2/162

W = 122/162 = 0.888 kg/m

Weight of 1 meter length 12mm Ø bar is 0.888 kg

For 60meter length = 60x1.580 = 53.28 kg

Similarly we can get the unit weight of steel bars in varying dia, by using this common formula

The following are the unit weight of 1meter length steel bars in different diameters.

·          6 mm Ø bar   = 0.222 kg/m

·          8 mm Ø bar   = 0.395 kg/m

·        10 mm Ø bar   = 0.617 kg/m

·        12 mm Ø bara   = 0.888 kg/m

·         16mm Ø bar   = 1.580 kg/m

·         20mm Ø bar   = 2.469 kg/m

·         25mm Ø bar   = 3.858 kg/m

·        32 mm Ø bar   = 6.320 kg/m

 For example - In Feet
1. Calculate the weight of 70 Feet long 16mm Ø bar
Solution:

Given, D = 16 mm

            L = 70 feet

We know that, W=D2/162

W = 162/162 = 1.580 kg/m

Weight of 1 meter length 16mm Ø bar is 1.580 kg

1 Feet = 0.3048 m

70 feet = 70x0.3048 = 21.336 meter

For 70feet length = 21.336x1.580 = 33.710 kg

2. Calculate the weight of 60 feet long 12mm Ø bar
Solution:

Given, D = 12 mm

            L = 60 feet

We know that, W=D2/162

W = 122/162 = 0.888 kg/m

Weight of 1 meter length 12mm Ø bar is 0.888 kg

1 Feet = 0.3048 m

60 feet = 60x0.3048 = 18.288 meter

For 60feet length = 18.288x0.888 = 16.239 kg

Therefore, the unit weight of steel bars can be obtained by using those formulas.
